Report: focus schools

Ontario universities can no longer be everything to everyone, says the head of the province’s advisory body on higher learning, and it’s time for them to specialize in the programs they do best.
In a report released today, the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario is calling on universities to pick a specialty and stick with it.
Council president Harvey Weingarten says governments should fund schools based on how effective their speciality programs are.
For example, he says a university that focuses on graduate programs would develop a plan and receive funding based on how successful it is at implementing that plan.
Weingarten says over the years institutions would begin to focus on the things they do best.
Specialty universities could force more students to relocate, but Weingarten says financial aid should be offered to help those who are struggling to cover those costs.
