Gabriel gets the C

17-year old Kitchener Rangers captain Gabriel Landeskog is the third youngest in team history.

“I don’t think about that,” Landeskog told 570 News when asked about taking the reins of responsibility at such a young age. “I’m still the same guy whether I’ve played 3 years or one year. Age doesn’t matter. Hopefully people still look at me the same way, even though I have a letter on my jersey.”

Landeskog is well aware of what that letter means. He cites recent captains like Kelly, Richards and Roy as examples he must live up to. At 17, Landeskog is next to only Brian Bellows and Jim Pavese as Rangers captains sipping from the Fountain of Youth.

Head coach and general manager, Steve Spott, is well aware of what bestowing that letter upon Landeskog means.

“Physically and mentally, he’s beyond his years,” Spott says of Landeskog. “I think everything about him exudes professionalism and I think he’s going to wear our sweater and represent our city in a first-class manner.”

Spott consulted assistants Paul Fixter and Troy Smith before making the selection, saying that Landeskog became an obvious choice. He likes Landeskog’s leadership on and off the ice, including his penchant for blocking shots, putting up points, and speaking up when it’s required.

Landeskog will wear the “C” for the first time when the Rangers take the ice against London tonight. Game time is 7 PM on 570 News.
