A Kitchener home owner fought the good fight and likely kept damages to a minimum, when a fire tore through the back of his house.
The 2:30 a.m. house fire was in a two-storey home at 434 Misty Cres., in the Ottawa and Lackner area.
The Kitchener Fire Department says the fire caused roughly $150,000 extensive damage, but nobody was hurt.
Fire officials believe the fire started on the rear exterior of the house, spread up the outside and into the attic.
Witnesses tell 570 News the home owner was fighting the blaze himself, out in his backyard with the garden hose — in his underwear — doing what he could until the fire trucks arrived.
Kitchener Fire Department policy recommends home owners not try to fight fires themselves, they should instead get to safety.
Witnesses say the fire was intense, with flames coming right up the back of the house and through the roof.
A few people in fact called 911 and the Kitchener Fire Department got the blaze under control.
A neighbour’s house sustained superficial heat damage.
Those same neighbours are in fact now housing the victims: a husband and wife, newly married, who only recently moved into the fire-struck home.
