New phase of Hwy. 8 makeover

It won’t be done for another two years, but there is more progress in that construction zone on Highway 8 in Kitchener.

Starting tonight weather permitting, the eastbound lanes of highway 8 move over onto the new part of the Grand River Bridge deck.

The MTO says drivers on Friday shouldn’t notice much of a difference with this traffic switch, except they’re are now travelling out to the 401 on new, smooth lanes.

It will still be two lanes each way, in that construction zone.

Work crews will now focus on the rehab of the old part of the Grand River Bridge.  The work includes a new deck, new barrier walls, and improved lighting.

Kevin English is the Area Contract Engineer with MTO, and he tells 570 News the project is moving along really well, and the contractor is on schedule.  He added there hasn’t been any real problems.

When the construction is finally complete in November of 2012, Highway 8 will be six lanes wide through the Grand River Bridge area.
