It’s now a reality in Ontario.
The Harmonized Sales Tax officially kicked in today, but that hasn’t dulled the cries from the opposition benches at Queen’s Park.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath told 570’s Gary Doyle Show the federal/provincial agreement was rammed through with no input from the public.
She says, since it is a legal agreement, she would not be able to scrap it for five years if her party came to power, but they would look for ways to lessen the blow, such as cuts to hydro and home heating costs.
She says she’s heard concerns from small business owners about how this will affect their bottom line and the impact on their employees.
Kitchener-Waterloo Conservative MPP Elizabeth Witmer agrees that Ontarians had little say on the new tax and her party too would consider options to lessen the tax bite.
She says, ideally, residents should have been allowed to vote on the HST before it was ushered in.
