Security measures and police tactics that happened over the G8 and G20 Summits are being called into question.
Amnesty International Canada is calling for an independent review.
The watch dog says human rights suffered considerably during violent protests downtown Toronto.
Alex Neve, Amnesty International Canada’s Secretary General tells 570’s Jeff Allan Show they have condemned the violence of some protestors who broke windows and torched police cruisers, but they are concerned over the heavy police presence.
Neve says the summit had an atmosphere of fear that kept many from taking part in peaceful demonstrations.
Meanwhile, police are defending their actions throughout the G20 summit, which saw more than 900 people arrested over the weekend insisting their methods were lawful.
Late yesterday, Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr, representing the big city Mayor’s Caucus says G20-like summits should be held in more remote locations.
Neve agrees. Having such a large conference in such densely populated residential areas is not a good idea.
