Open Text opens doors for young workers

The workers of the future are finding gainful employment in Waterloo Region. In a ranking of the 50 best places for young employees in Canada, three local companies make the list. Sybase Canada, Research in Motion and Open Text Corporation — all based in Waterloo — are each recognized for either providing tuition subsidies, co-op programs, or doing on-campus recruitment.
Eugene Roman, Chief Technology Officer at Open Text, says his company is looking for that mix of bright, young minds and “grey hairs.” Roman tells 570 News that young people coming out of school today are very highly skilled and well-equipped, adding that Open Text continues looking for the “very best” of those young minds. He likens it to building a hockey team, where the wisdom of experience is combined with the freshness of ideas and the young minds at work.
Roman says Open Text is attractive to young employees because of the opportunities it offers to grow with the company. Open Text is one of the 15 fastest growing companies in the world and offers employees opportunities in different corporate offices, including Munich, Germany; Redding, England and Austin, Texas. Roman says every Canadian company that wants to grow and work into the future needs to hire young people and he encourages all companies to follow Open Text’s lead.
Roman says it would be wrong to think young workers are motivated simply by money. Instead, he believes the key to attracting and retaining employees is offering opportunities for growth. Matching talent with the correct company, says Roman, is the key to Canada’s future economic success. He says this country has “turned sand into oil, rock into diamonds and human capital into great ideas and products.” Roman says this must become Canada’s hallmark because we can no longer rely on resources of the past. They are not the resources of the future, according to Roman. He believes the resources of the future are this “human capital,” these young minds and fresh ideas that Open Text is trying to attract.
