Cottage Preparation for Summer

Driving up north to open and inspecting the cottage can be nerve-wracking.

Between damage and break-ins, you’re never sure what you’re going to find once you arrive.

Even though many people hear about cottages being ransacked during the off season, All State Insurance says that theft only accounts for 12 percent of cottage-related claims. Wind was the number one reason, with water and fire right behind.

Allstate spokesperson Amy Woods says that’s why you need to protect your cottage for any damage that could happen while you are away during the week.

That includes, properly storing deck furniture, tying down the BBQ and properly storing the boat.

She says give your smoke detectors a test and clean out the chimney and inspect the BBQ.

Woods says it doesn’t hurt to review your insurance policy at the start of the season
