Groups argue against stormwater change

A committee meeting at Kitchener City Hall today will discuss how stormwater services will be paid for.
The city has approved a plan that moves from a tax-based model to a user-based fee.
That means homeowners would pay less and schools and churches would pay more because they have parking lots and larger areas where rainwater penetrates the soil.
John O’Brien is the Business Administrator with the Roman Catholic Church’s Hamilton Diocese.
He says the changes could cost fourteen Catholic churches in Kitchener a total of $35,000 a year and the parishioners will be forced to carry that burden.
O’Brien will ask the committee today that churches be given an exemption because they provide services and programs to the community, like other tax-exempt charities.
