Fraud experts called in after theft at Waterloo insurance office

Fraud specialists have been called in to work with teachers whose sensitive personal information was stolen from  The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan head office in Waterloo.
Regional police say the robbery happened on December 3, 2009 and describe it as a “smash and grab” operation.
They believe the thieves were not after the information on the laptops, but rather something they could quickly sell.
Sensitive and unencrypted information belonging to about 8,600 elementary teachers in Toronto was stolen.
Fraud experts have received about 600 calls from the teachers and the insurance company has received about 60 calls.
