Canadians pledged at least 9.4 million dollars during last night’s “Canada For Haiti” telethon.
The one-hour telecast featured Celine Dion and other celebrities appealing for money to help victims of the January 12th earthquake that devastated the impoverished Caribbean country.
Ottawa says it will match donations dollar-for-dollar, boosting the total to at least 18.8 million. “Canada For Haiti” was followed by “Hope For Haiti” hosted by actor George Clooney.
The quake killed an estimated 200-thousand people, including at least 17 Canadians. Ottawa says the number of Canadians missing in Haiti has been trimmed to 283.
