A woman is dead after her car struck a VIA Rail train at a crossing on Nafziger Road early Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Scott Richardson with Waterloo Regional Police says the unidentified woman was the only occupant of the car.
He adds the initial investigation shows the northbound car hit the side of the five-car passenger train at the crossing around 6:30 a.m.
VIA Rail confirms it was Train 86 en route to Toronto, making a stop in Kitchener.
Richardson says there were some twenty passengers on board the train, which stayed at the scene some 100 metres down the tracks.
The victim’s car was knocked about ten metres, coming to rest beside the tracks.
The victim will not be identified until next of kin are notified.
Signal lights and bells were operating normally at the time of the crash, but the crossing is not equipped with crossing arms.
Police have shut down Nafziger between the 7/8 and Snyder’s Road near New Hamburg.
Sgt. Richardson says the road could be closed until 1:00 p.m.
