Kitchener to pass 2010 budget in a week

Kitchener City Council is expected to pass its 2010 budget one week from today.
But first, there’s the matter of a public input session, set for tonight.
Dan Chapman, the city’s General Manager of Financial Services says they’ve managed to reduce the tax hike to around 3% and hope to be able to bring it down even further over the coming week.
Just over a month ago, the increase checked in at just over 4%.
If the budget passes as is, Kitchener ratepayers would pay about $27 a year more on the city portion of their tax bill.
Chapman tells 570 News, considering the challenges the city faced in drafting this fiscal plan, he expects a good turnout at tonight’s meeting.
The city is proposing reductions in many departments, in an effort to provide a balance of cuts and not hit any one area too hard.
Among the reductions are fewer swimming pool hours, changes to parking rates for staff, and not filling some vacant positions.
Tonight’s meeting is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the city hall council chambers.
