As Santa gets his sleigh and reindeer ready for a long night of work, children across the country and around the world can keep up to speed on his travels thanks to Norad. Beginning today you’ll be able to follow the jolly man as he makes his way around the world.
Naval Lieutenant with Norad Desmond James tells 570 News they began tracking Santa on Christmas Eve 1955 by accident. He explains that a Colorado Springs-based company’s advertisement for children to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the Continental Air Defence Command Operation Centre and specifically to the Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup.
Not wanting to disappoint kids he had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born. James says today they have over 12-hundred volunteers working Christmas Eve and Christmas to track Santa.
