A terrible disappointment for Kitchener’s Kelly Vanderbeek.
Doctors have confirmed the worst: the downhill skier has torn the ACL in her left knee and will not be able to compete in the Vancouver Olympics.
It happened during a spill in France yesterday, during a training run at Val D’Isere.
Vanderbeek’s ski caught as she was racing downhill and she twisted her knee.
She had been considered a serious medal contender for Canada heading into the winter games.
VanderBeek later told the Toronto Star “There wasn’t an ounce in my body that didn’t believe I was going to leave there without a medal.” There.. being Vancouver.
Her parents, meantime, tell today’s Record about a sad coincidence.
Yesterday, a courier arrived at their home with their tickets for the Olympics.
As for the future, her mother says they’ll just have to wait and see if doctors will be able to repair the knee.
This would have been Vanderbeek’s second Olympics.
Four years ago in Italy, she placed fourth in the Super G Slalom.
