The Duke of Wellington’s tips for supporting local restaurants during the pandemic

The Duke of Wellington, a popular pub and eatery in Waterloo with 11 Readers’ Choice Awards (2020) nominations, knows a thing or two about being affected by the pandemic. With customer and staff safety top of mind at all times, Desi Fatkin and her team have worked hard to ensure you can get the food you love, while practising the social distancing you need.

“We understand how difficult it is for people to stay away from friends and family, and to cook every single meal day after day,” says Desi. “The Duke of Wellington, and many other local restaurants and pubs, have done everything possible to help ease this burden while staying within safety guidelines.”

Local restaurants are champions of the community, not only providing social spaces and great food, but also being quick to sponsor minor sports teams, donate to the food bank, and more. Now restaurants need the community’s support. Here’s how to help keep these establishments going:

Order and Pick Up

Many restaurants are offering pick up, curbside delivery, private delivery, or delivery through apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Skip the Dishes. Remember, however, that third-party apps take a very large cut, which reduces the margin dramatically for non-chain eateries. While all orders are appreciated, if you can use the restaurant’s private delivery option or pick up your order, that is greatly appreciated.

Sit Outside

Social distancing outside has been shown to be quite safe, which is why some restaurants have adapted their patios for outdoor dining. If you are craving good food and good company, see if your favourite restaurant has a patio option.

Gift Cards

Many are not comfortable dining out just yet, and that’s okay. Buy a gift card for later use or to give to a friend or family member.

Call Ahead or Check the Website

Many restaurants are operating with reduced hours, may or may not have open dining rooms, and may require special protocols like hand sanitizing on site. Servers must also stand away from patrons and some are wearing masks. Call ahead to see what to expect from your dining experience and respect the restaurant’s protocols. This is for everyone’s safety.
