Pursuit shuts down major Southern California freeway

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — A motorist who has been fleeing police for hours in Southern California has come to a stop on southbound Interstate 5 along Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.

Southbound traffic on the heavily travelled route has been completely halted and the back is growing Thursday afternoon as officers point weapons at the vehicle.

The pursuit began in the Los Angeles area, where police cars several times bumped the car and spun it around, but each time the driver was able to recover and speed off even as pieces of the vehicle flew off.

Los Angeles police say the incident began when suburban Culver City police began pursuing the vehicle for an unknown reason. The pursuit entered Los Angeles, where the car was involved in a hit-and-run with a scooter rider.
