Waterloo students speak out about provincial cuts to school repairs

By Christine Clark

NDP MPP Catherine Fife spoke out about provincial cuts to school repairs this week and she had some help from a few local voices.

A handful of students at Lincoln Heights Public School in Waterloo wrote in to the Waterloo MPP who shared their concerns about the cuts in the provincial legislature.

“Grade 4 student Ryan says 'we don't have air conditioning so our classrooms get really hot, our windows don't have screens so sometimes wasps fly in on a hot day. I got stung by a wasp twice while in class.'”

Fife says Lincoln Heights P.S. is in need of $3 million dollars in repairs, and across the City of Waterloo, $68 million in school repairs is needed.

“Caiden, age 10, wants the government to know how difficult it was to learn after his class was moved to the cafeteria because of a ceiling leak in their classroom. William who just graduated from Lincoln Heights, that teachers and students should be able to complete their work based on their abilities and not on the environment they are working in.”

The provincial $100-million fund for school repairs got axed earlier this year as part of the Tory government's plan to scrap the province's cap and trade program.

Fife's full speech in the legislature can be heard in the video below:
