A special honour for City of Waterloo councillor Diane Freeman.

She has become the first woman and professional engineer to be named as the Regimental Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 31 Combat Engineer Regiment (The Elgins).

Freeman is also the first resident of Waterloo and civilian to hold the prestigious title.

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled to be named to this post,” Freeman said in a release. “I not only have tremendous respect for the Canadian military, but hold The Elgins in very high regard. I am committed to serving and representing The Elgins to the best of my abilities.”

The handover of duties took place over the summer.

The Elgins date back to 1866. Mostly recent they have been involved in both active deployment and domestic emergency response.
