Update on COVID-19 situation in local hospitals

By Maddie Demarte

As Waterloo Region continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, local hospitals have continued to care for those with the virus.

As of Thursday, there are 12 actively infectious COVID patients between Waterloo-Wellington's four hospitals.

St. Mary's General Hospital has three patients in acute care, and none in intensive care. Cambridge Memorial Hospital has one in acute care. Grand River Hospital is caring for seven patients, with none in the ICU. Finally, Guelph General Hospital has only one COVID patient in its care.

It's important to note though, there are still many people who are no longer infectious who were hospitalized with the virus, and remain in local hospitals. They are not included in this latest update.

“Our approach throughout the pandemic has been one of solidarity as we worked together, shared resources, knowledge and words of support and encouragement as a community,” said Lee Fairclough, President of St. Mary's General Hospital. “The past 18 months have required tremendous sacrifices on all our part but through the struggles and loss, we have also witnessed moments of great joy that gave us hope, lifted our spirits, and reminded us that we were not alone; we were in this together.”

Fairclough reiterates she is grateful for everything we have accomplished as a community, and area hospitals will continue to be there for patients and families throughout the pandemic.
