Regional council has voted unanimously to declare a climate emergency.
It happened at their meeting on Wednesday night.
The region said in a release it plans to provide continued support to climate action in the community.
Council has directed staff to work with Climate Action Waterloo, to investigate tools to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions including the possibility of implementing a carbon budget.
The region joins more than 450 municipalities in declaring a climate emergency, including Kitchener, Wilmot, Woolwich and Wellesley Townships.
Tonight, I was pleased to bring forward a #ClimateEmergency declaration at the @RegionWaterloo, which was seconded by @Sandy_Shantz and adopted unanimously by council. Thx to @shapingsky & Andres Fuentes Martinez for your community leadership and to council for your support. pic.twitter.com/9KaHAoDhVo
