A Canadian professor has ended a 55-year drought for female physicists after being awarded the Nobel Prize for physics.
Donna Strickland of the University of Waterloo shares the honour with Arthur Ashkin of the United States and Gerard Mourou of France for their work in laser physics.
Strickland became emotional when she was told she's only the third woman to have won the physics prize, the first being Marie Curie in 1903.
She says she hopes her win encourages more recognition of female physicists.
Here is some of the reaction that has been posted to Twitter:
I am so proud, this is a tremendous day for Donna Strickland, women in science, Canada, and the entire @UWaterloo community.
