New overnight emergency shelter set up in Kitchener

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church has partnered with The Working Centre and Region of Waterloo to get a new overnight emergency shelter operating.
It was launched last Sunday in a multi-purpose area of the church, located at 54 Queen Street North in Kitchener.
Organizers say they will be able to provide overnight shelter and respite for up to 50 people who don't have a place to stay.
“This is a vital project that provides a seven day a week evening shelter that combines staffing and community volunteers. This cooperative model will expand shelter options during the cold winter nights,” Joe Mancini, director of The Working Centre, said in a news release.
Bob Courtney, who is a member of the Local Mission Initiatives committee at St. Andrew's, is thankful the church can help.
“St. Andrew's has a lengthy tradition of reaching out to those in need outside our doors, in keeping with our faith and beliefs. I am humbled to see how our community has again rallied on short notice to be hosts.” Courtney said.
The shelter will employ Working Centre staff, but fully vaccinated volunteers are also needed to fill 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., as well as 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. shifts. You can email – shelter@standrewskw.com – if interested.
