Michael Schmitt, former Director of Education, has died

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board has announced the passing of former Director of Education Michael Schmitt.
Schmitt served as interim director of the school board for the 2014-2015 school year. This was his final job before his retirement.
It is believed Schmitt passed away from a long battle with cancer.
Schmitt had a nearly four decade career in education. He started his career as a teacher in Belleville, eventually coming to Waterloo Region as the founding principal of Resurrection Catholic Secondary School.
In his retirement, Schmitt was an active volunteer in the community. Among many roles he served on the board and as president of Supportive Housing of Waterloo.
There has been an outpouring of support on social media to the reaction of Schmitt's death, many from notable members of the community.
Schmitt's family will receive relatives and friends from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home.
