Indigenous commitment ceremony to be held at UW Thursday

By Christine Clark

As Thursday marks the start of fall, it also marks a spiritually significant time for local Indigenous peoples.

The Indigenous peoples of the University of Waterloo will ask the university for a “full commitment to reconciliation, Indigenization and decolonization at the institution.”

The Indigenous commitment ceremony will be marked with a sunrise ceremony at 7 a.m. at the Ceremonial Fire Grounds at United College.

A cedar circle, pipe ceremony and traditional feast will also be held Thursday.

In a news release, the group says the fall equinox is a time to express gratitude and appreciate our relationship to creation and our relatives on the earth.
