If you have lived in the area for a while, you will definitely know some of the restaurants he will forever be connected to.

On Wednesday, the Charcoal Group of Restaurants confirmed its founder, Delmer (Del) Wideman, has passed away at the age of 93.

Initially known as the Charcoal Pit, when it first opened in 1956, two years later it was renamed the Charcoal Steak House.

It moved to its current location at 2980 King Street East in Kitchener in 1976. It was originally located above the HiWay Market.

Even though Wideman retired in 1991, he remained a regular guest. His two sons, Tim and Tom, are also still involved with the Charcoal Group of Restaurants.

“From all of us at The Charcoal Group of Restaurants, we send our deepest condolences to the Wideman family & their many friends. We will miss serving you Del, thank you for taking that leap so many years ago and we promise to always keep your legacy alive in all we do,” read a post on the Charcoal Group of Restaurants' Facebook page.

No funeral arrangements have been announced yet.

Other restaurants that are part of the group include Beertown, Wildcraft Grill and Long Bar, as well as The Bauer Kitchen.
