Council approves preliminary design for Stage 2 ION

By Lisa Drew

The Region of Waterloo is chugging along with plans for the ION's extension into Cambridge.

During a virtual meeting Wednesday night, council accepted the early designs for Stage 2 ION – running from Kitchener into Cambridge.

This move helps out the City of Cambridge and its council as it plans for the construction and impact.

Construction is still some ten years away.

A regional release said initial property impacts have been identified but more work needs to be done, including coming up with the full price tag.

It's been estimated at $1.3 billion.

A fall open house showed a revamped design running in the Preston area.

The Cambridge end of the LRT route would run some 18 kilometres when it is finally built.
