Winter Patio Party ‘lighting up’ K-W this weekend

By Taylor Pace

KWFamous wants you to bundle up and brave the cold air for their Winter Patio Party this weekend.

From 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, downtown Kitchener and Uptown Waterloo will be buzzing with activities, from snow pong and outdoor karaoke to fire dancing and free tarot readings.

Some might wonder why they would host an outdoor event during the dead of winter, but KWFamous co-founders Robin Lindner and Elaine Decleir instead wonder “why wouldn’t you?”

Though windchill temperatures are expected to hover around double digits, the pair are undeterred by the cold weather.

“We have everything we need to tackle whatever weather is coming at us,” Lindner said on The Mike Farwell Show on CityNews 570 earlier this week. “I think that if people are in the mindset to have a good time, they're going to have a good time.”

“We just decided we wanted to light up all of Kitchener and Waterloo and have fun this Saturday,” Decleir added.

Lindner and Decleir created KWFamous to celebrate all things Kitchener-Waterloo. On their site you will find a variety of KW-themed objects, including t-shirts, mugs and stickers, highlighting landmarks like Mt Trashmore, Otis the Swan and Victoria Park.

The brand has grown quite a bit since first launching, with people sporting their merch throughout the region — something Lindner said came as a surprise to them.

“We’re so grateful for the community support. I noticed this sticker on somebody’s car the other day and was like, oh my god, you’re putting it on your car! That’s such high value,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun. And we continue to grow and bring more stuff to the KW community.”

There are over $1,000 in prizes to be won. To enter, all you have to do is text them a picture from the locations participating in the Patio Party.

But, she says those who just want to hang out are welcome to come out and support local businesses.

With over 10 stops, Decleir says there is plenty of room for everybody — meaning those interested can still sign up to participate with their team.

“We say kids aged zero to 99. There’s just something fun for everyone.”

The schedule is entirely online so you can plan ahead what stops you want to hit.

For those who want the chance to win, they created a text message system where people can take pictures at each location and be entered to win prizes.
