Temporary home planned for St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market

In a couple of months, The St. Jacobs Market will no longer house dirt and rubble but a new home for the hundreds of vendors that lost everything in the Labour Day Weekend fire.
A temporary tent-like structure built from fabric and steel is planned for the area, while blue-prints for a permanent building continue to be discussed.
Director of Market Operations Sheila Shantz tells 570 News this new structure has boosted the moral of all those involved with the market.
“Everybody is really excited about this…being able to get into one spot together again…every week brings something new.”
This week, The Market is hoping the new floor will be poured. Shantz says the building itself should be open for business late November, early December; weather permitting.
Almost all the vendors previously set up in The Main Building that burned down will have a home in the temporary building. The Fast Food Vendors will remain in Peddler’s Village where the appropriate amount of exhaust hoods will be installed.
Shantz adds fire safety has been a top priority when dealing not only with the temporary building but the final structure as well.
“We are putting in a sprinkler system…it would be natural to have that in the new building as well.”
Construction for the permanent building is set to begin in 2014. The Market is still in the early stages of planning.
