Police make arrest after ‘cash traps’ found on multiple ATMs in Guelph

By Erin Anderson

Police in Guelph have made an arrest stemming from what they’re calling a sophisticated scheme involving ATMs in the Royal City.

The Guelph Police Service was contacted in late June by an ATM technician who reportedly discovered ‘cash traps’ on multiple bank machines.

The technician had been called to fix the ATMs after customers complained that the machines weren’t working.

Police say the ‘cash trap’ devices were attached with double-sided tape and prevented money from being dispensed, and the involved suspects would later return to collect the cash and reapply the traps.

Investigators found at least six banks in Guelph where the devices were temporarily installed on ATMs, with at least $4,400 stolen from victims.

Guelph police note that they worked with multiple other police services who were investigating similar incidents in their jurisdictions.

This week, a 52-year-old man was arrested and charged with nine counts of theft under $5,000 and seven counts of mischief under $5,000.

Police say the accused has no fixed address and was returned to Guelph, where he’ll appear in court on Sept. 21.
