RIM tops in R & D

Research In Motion is spending more on research and development than any other Canadian company. According to figures released today, RIM spent $1.1-billion on R&D last year, up 51% from the year before.
“(The list) allows companies to benchmark themselves to one another and to the overall performance of the market,” said Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource, which compiles the annual list.
All told, Canada’s Top 100 corporate spenders devoted $10.22-billion to R&D last year, down almost 2% from Fiscal 2008. The decrease is a sign of concern.
“Research and development represents the products and services of the future,” explains Freedman. “If companies are doing less research today that means they’re going to be less competitive in the future. And that’s going to translate into fewer exports and fewer jobs and fewer taxes paid.”
RIM is not the only company represented on this year’s Top 100. You also find Open Text with R&D spending of $132.7-million, Dalsa at $41.2-million, Sandvine at $28.2-million, Linamar at $24.4-million, Com Dev at $17.5-million, Descartes Systems Group at $16.6-million, and MKS with $14.2 million.
Freedman says the numbers bode well for RIM’s future.
“You’re seeing lots of announcements and pre-announcements about new products coming out of the RIM stable, so I think it’s a very good sign for them.”
