The damage survey team from the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) is looking deeper into twister activity in Waterloo Region and the Tavistock area following Wednesday’s damaging storm.
The group from Western University confirmed tornado evidence in the Bamberg area of Wellesley, about 20 minutes northwest of Kitchener.
The team also confirmed a possible twister in the Tavistock area, outside of Stratford.
“The NTP survey team documented an EF1 downburst in the Brodhagen area, and we now have evidence that tornadoes likely occurred in the Bamberg and Tavistock areas,” read the update.
“The survey team will be back out investigating these and other damage areas tomorrow (Friday).”
Further west of Waterloo Region, an EF1 downburst was confirmed in the Brodhagen area of West Perth. NTP officials said the damage in the Toronto and Orr Lake area were also caused by downbursts.
In Wellesley, the cleanup has been extensive, with road closures in place and the Erbhaven Trails shut down.
Residents were asked to avoid using the trails while crews continued to clear debris and low-hanging tree limbs.
The City of Stratford posted an update on storm damage, reporting downed trees and debris in several neighbourhoods.
City officials also posted they were working to support those experiencing homelessness, impacted by the storm, most notably near the transit terminal.
“As City crews clean up in the aftermath of yesterday’s powerful storm, staff are also continuing to check in on some of our most vulnerable citizens to ensure they’re safe,” read a notice from the city.
“We will continue to try to find that delicate balance of keeping people informed about our homelessness response, while at the same time respecting the privacy and dignity of those experiencing it.”
The NTP team is also looking into potential tornado activity in east Windsor and in other areas of Essex and Kent Counties.
