A truck driver from Puslinch was allegedly caught hauling millions of dollars worth of contraband tobacco through eastern Ontario.

The Ontario Provincial Police got a complaint, Tuesday morning about a speeding 18-wheeler on the eastbound Highway 401, near Kingston.

Officers found the truck off the highway and escorted it to a nearby inspection station.

Police said the trailer was filled with almost 18,000 kilos of fine-cut tobacco, with a street value of about $4.4 million.

The 60-year-old driver from Puslinch was charged with trafficking contraband tobacco.

The OPP said that much illegal tobacco would have brought in more than $9-million dollars in tax to the province.
