The Kitchener Rangers are hosting their bitter rivals, the London Knights, on a special evening at The Aud.
The Rangers enter the final week of the regular season sitting in second place in the Western Conference behind the juggernaut Knights and the West Division champion Windsor Spitfires.
The season series between the top two clubs in the OHL has favoured the Knights who have won three of five, so far. Expect a playoff atmosphere at the Aud.
Fans can also expect to see volunteers from the House of Friendship who will be collecting donations on this Don Cameron Potato night.
The former radio play-by-play voice began the initiative in the mid-1990s when Darcy Harris played for the Rangers. He and Don were both from Prince Edward Island and wildly proud of their shared east coast heritage.
From there, the idea grew to help House of Friendship and its emergency food hamper program. With both men being from P.E.I., potatoes were a natural choice.
Mike Farwell, current Rangers’ play-by-play voice and long-time colleague and friend of Don’s, recalled a particular story that epitomized both the fundraiser and the man.
“Don Cameron, helping out the volunteers as fans came into the game. And, he put on the same burlap vest that all the other volunteers were wearing to collect potatoes, and they gave him a name tag. Which he put on to his vest. There is not a person that walked into the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium that did not know that was Don Cameron.”
Farwell went on to say like the potato itself, Don was a humble man.
“The number of times he would utter the phrase ‘but, I’m just a broadcaster’ when people would give him credit for things or more credit than he thought that he deserved. He was always willing to use the platform he had to amplify the House of Friendship, the potato night to help those in our community in need.”
Fans planning to attend the game are encouraged to bring cash donations rather than bags of potatoes. The House of Friendship says the cash can go a long way and target specific areas of need. They say they will accept bags of potatoes but would prefer cash.
After tonight, the Rangers host Owen Sound Friday night before wrapping the regular season in Guelph, Sunday afternoon.
Game time tonight is 7 p.m.
570 NewsRadio will have all the action beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
