UW receives large donation to support AI, blockchain research

The University of Waterloo has received a massive boost in funding for research into artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain.

The university said they have received $1.4 million (US$1 million) from Interop Labs which will help grow its research endowment and establish a new research lab into AI and blockchain research at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science. The new lab will be called the GENESIS Lab, which stands for Generative AI for Secure, Interconnected Systems.

The university said in a press release that the lab will offer 12 Ph.D. and six undergrad-level fellowships through Waterloo Blockchain, a student-run organization.

“We are grateful to Interop Labs for their generous gift that will help us push the boundaries of AI and blockchain innovation,” said Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor at Waterloo. “Enabling inter-disciplinary and industry cooperation, this partnership exemplifies Waterloo’s commitment to collaborating with industry leaders as we continue to attract top research talent and innovate solutions for a better future for humanity and our planet.”

The University of Waterloo is also home to the Institute For Quantum Computing, the Waterloo Data And Artificial Intelligence Institute and The Cybersecurity And Privacy Institute.
