A white Christmas for Waterloo Region? Environment Canada says…maybe

Given the rain and warm temperatures this week, the prospect of a white Christmas isn’t looking too good.

But you never know. It has cooled off and there is the likelihood of snow this weekend. However, the question remains, will there be snow on Christmas?

Environment Canada meteorologist, Trudy Kidd told 570 NewsRadio there is a chance.

“It is really tough to tell right now. It’s a bit too early to be confident one way or the other,” she said. “Right now, we’re seeing the possibility of a few flurries on Christmas Eve but there is a warm-up after that.”

Kidd added that it will really depend on how much snow accumulates on the 24th. The more we get, the more likely it is to stick around.

One thing she can say for certain is December is off to a good start when it comes to snow.

“It’s safe to say that this year has been snowier than last year. Last year, I feel like I don’t need to look up the data to verify that it was a very dry December. And, not just dry also warm.”

So, it remains to be seen if a white Christmas is in the books this year for Waterloo Region. However, for those travelling to see friends and family over the holidays, drivers will need to pay attention to the forecast for where they are going. Kidd says there are storms a brewin’ for the snowbelt.

“We are expecting snow squalls, once again off Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. The winds are a more northerly direction so people will notice that it’s going to be very cold. But, with those winds aligned that way it means the snow squalls are going to impact areas like Sarnia/Lambton and Barrie/Midland, that sort of area. So, if you’re traveling you have to check your forecast and be prepared for weather that is different from where you’re starting off.”
