Mayor’s market sets up in Uptown Waterloo

By Justine Fraser

The Mayors Oktoberfest Market is taking over Uptown Waterloo today from noon until 4 p.m. brining in local vendors, live performances, family-friendly activities and the iconic Wunderwagon.

This year also marks the return of the barrel race!

Jeyas Balaskanthan, the executive director for the Uptown Waterloo BIA said the businesses uptown have had a rough few years between LRT construction and the pandemic.

“They survived two major challenges and they are thriving, and we want to make sure that there’s an opportunity to put a spotlight on them by having the market on King Street.”

King Street in Waterloo will be closed Oct. 13 from Central to Bridgeport Street.

“We are going to have a lot of vendors, market vendors being part of it as well, they are going to be all on King Street,” Balaskanthan. said, noting they are expecting 25 to 30 vendors.

The BIA switched up their plan this year and are hosting the market along King instead of in the parking lot behind city hall.

“The biggest difference in having the market like this in a parking lot behind a building versus on a street, you’re going to stumble upon the market when its on the street. Whether you drive by, walk by, you’re on a bus, you see it.”

The Uptown Waterloo BIA’s website has a list of parking lots for anyone planning on attending.
