Mysterious ‘rock island’ appears on Grand River

It’s a mystery that have people in Galt shaking their heads and wondering: who built the rock island on the Grand River?
The man-made tear-shaped island formed of rocks can be found near Mill Race Park on the Grand River, and includes a Canadian flag and a small wagon.
One Cambridge resident Jane said she has seen the island grow since the spring and that it should be taken down.
“I saw it from the very beginning when it was just the flag there and just a few stones,” said Jane. “I’ve watched it grow over the summer and it has puzzled me.”
Another passerby, Fahid Anjum from Mississauga, was in Cambridge for work and says it should not be taken down.
“I think more and more people should join the movement, it looks so cool,” said Anjum. “This is beautiful, honestly they should make a pathway so people can come check it out.”
In a statement to 570 NewsRadio, the GRCA said they are aware of the man-made island and are in contact with the City of Cambridge, Waterloo Regional Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
They add they do not own that section of the riverbed, but will keep an eye on it as part of their responsibilities for dam inspections and flood management.
570 NewsRadio has also reached out to the City of Cambridge and regional police for comment but has yet to receive a reply.
