Rangers on brink of advancing after Game 5 win

The Kitchener Rangers are a win away from advancing to the second round of the OHL playoffs.

The Blueshirts took Game 5 of their series against the Erie Otters 3-2 in overtime on Friday and now lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.

Trent Swick scored the game-winning goal to secure the win.

“It was hard work, getting pucks to the net,” Swick said. “It was honestly a lucky goal, but I think I deserved it after all the empty nets I’ve missed the past two games. It’s the biggest goal of my career and the best moment of my life.”

The Rangers put 50 shots on net, and Head Coach Jussi Ahokas said it was the team’s best performance of the series.

“We had a balanced defence and our offence was creating plenty of chances,” said Ahokas. “Really happy for Swick, he got the goal. He had four or five super chances before to score already, so great he got the winner.”

Tanner Lam opened the scoring for the Rangers in the 2nd period before the Otters answered to tie the game heading into the 3rd period. Then, Matthew Sop scored to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead before Dylan Edwards scored his fifth of the series to force overtime.

Jackson Parsons made 31 saves in net for Kitchener.
