Tellers tricked with $2K of fake toonies in Kitchener bank fraud: WRPS

By Justin Koehler

Waterloo regional police are investigating after fake toonies were exchanged at a bank for cash.

The reported incident happened on Dec. 22, when a man walked into a bank at the corner of Highland Road West and Westmount Road West.

Police say he allegedly asked the teller to exchange 40 rolls of toonies for some paper currency, totalling $2,000.

After picking up the rolls and seeing that each had a toonie on each end, the tellers agreed to make the exchange and gave the man the money he had requested, police said.

When the teller later opened the rolls, they found there was a single toonie on each end and in between was a line of metal washers.

Staff then called WRPS.

Surveillance footage from the bank have allowed police to release photos of the suspect. Police are asking the public to help identify the man involved.

Officers are asking that anyone who can help with the investigation give them a call at 519-570-9777, extension 2250, or reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1800-222-8477.
