More groups call on region to stop expropriation of Wilmot farmland, petition reaches 20,000 signatures

More people and groups are telling Waterloo Region politicians to stop their plan to use over 700 acres of farmland in Wilmot Township for industrial development.
The Executive of the Waterloo Regional Labour Council wrote an open letter to Regional Chair Karen Redman and other local politicians sharing their concerns.
The letter states that as farmland dwindles in the province, “we lose our ability to feed our own population, which is an important pillar to being a well-functioning and sustainable society.”
It also questions if other reclaimed aggregate sites were even considered for development instead of the farmland northeast of Nafziger Road and Bleams Road.
The letter is the latest attempt from farmland owners and community groups to receive answers from the region and Wilmot Township about why this has happened.
An online petition has also passed a milestone. As of Wednesday, April 3, over 20,000 people had signed the petition which calls for the region to stop appropriating farmland in Wilmot Township.
Earlier this year, Canacre Ltd., a consulting firm used by the region approached farmland owners telling them to sell their land or risk having it be expropriated.
