Regional police continue to investigate a fatal shooting in a Kitchener residential neighbourhood Thursday.
Police said a 28-year-old man was killed in the shooting incident. They believe it was a targeted attack.
Chris Iden, Public Information Officer told CityNews 570 that police responded to the Gray Street and Casey Drive area of the city at around 9 a.m., after multiple 911 phone calls.
“Upon arrival, police did locate one individual who was injured but now has been pronounced deceased,” he said. “We are still early on in the investigation and we are still obtaining information. We are asking the member’s of the public to assist if they have any information to share.”
It is unclear if the deceased individual lived on the street. The man was shot outside of a residence on Gray Street.
Iden said there are no safety concerns for the general public at this time.
You’re warned to expect an “extensive police presence” Thursday.
Six local schools were briefly placed in a hold and secure. Four within the public board and two within the Catholic board. All of those have been lifted.
Marta said she’s been living in the area for about 26 years and she’s never seen anything like this before.
“I’ve been here over 26 years roughly, I’ve never seen this. I don’t like it, of course, nobody would enjoy this. When you see that many cruisers you know there is trouble,” said Marta.
“I heard a sound and I came out but saw nothing,” one neighbour said. “Two or three bangs, I guess you should call it. Like something dropped like a firecracker. I heard it from inside, I was having breakfast.”
Another neighbour who lives in the area, Anibal, said he was surprised to see this in his neighbourhood.
“I was just at home and came out and see all of this. I didn’t know what was happening. Police officer came over and asked me if I saw anything and I didn’t see or hear anything,” he said. “This is a beautiful area, it’s quiet. I was surprised by all of this.”
Carmen said the neighbourhood is an extremely quiet one where everyone normally keeps to themselves.
“A police officer came to the door and I learned that there was a potential shooting,” he said. “It’s still surreal right now. I’ve been here for 34 years and it’s the first time any of this is happening.”
