Another “major” winter storm is on the way to Waterloo Region.
Peter Kimbell, Weather Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada, said a system is coming from Texas that will bring more snow beginning late Friday. He notes it is possible for Waterloo Region to see 15 cm or more of snow over the weekend.
“There’s a possibility of some of the precipitation turning into rain, but most of it we think will probably indeed be snow,” said Kimbell. “Which means that Friday night and Saturday will be pretty messy for people in Central Ontario.”
A similar storm hit Waterloo Region on Tuesday, with 24mm of total precipitation and five centimeters of snow. Regional police said between 6 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. they received 240 reports of collisions. For this weekend, Environment Canada is forecasting conditions resembling those on Tuesday.
Environment Canada has not issued a weather warnings or any other alerts, but CityNews Weather Specialist Denise Andreacchi says it’s only a matter of time.
“By the middle of the commute home Friday night, we are expecting light to steady snowfall,” said Andreacchi. “This is around the time the winds really start to pick up as well. Late afternoon and early evening, gusts out of the east 40 to up to 70 km/h, and we are going to start to see that accumulating snow really develop.”
Following the weekend storm, Kimbell said winter winds from Western Canada are on the way with temperatures expected to plummet beginning early next week. Andreacchi is calling for a low of -14 degrees Celsius Sunday night.
