The OPP say Waterloo Regional Police were one of several Ontario police agencies, involved in a four-year long FBI investigation into cybercrime, called Operation Cookie Monster.
The focus was an illegal online criminal market known as The Genesis Market.
In February this year, the FBI got in touch with Ontario Police Services about suspects in their respective areas, who had allegedly bought information through Genesis.
Search warrants were executed yesterday, but the OPP are not specifying where.
The FBI believes that by this time last year, one-and-a-half million devices, from financial sectors to governments, were infected with malware sending data back to Genesis.
That data includes email addresses and passwords, to be bundled up and sold.
It’s not known how many victims were potentially impacted.
