St. Patrick's Day is next Friday and Regional Police have prepared for the day which typically brings thousands to street parties on Ezra Avenue in Waterloo.
“We don't reveal the essence of our operational plans other than we're very attentive to the weather, the fact this is landing on a Friday, and Saturday as well, and we are well prepared,” said Mark Crowell, the region's police chief.
In 2019, around 33,000 people were on the street at the peak of St. Patrick's day celebrations, but that number has significantly dropped since then due to the pandemic.
A year ago, police blocked off Ezra Avenue behind Wilfrid Laurier University forcing partiers to go to nearby Marshall street.
Crowell encouraged anyone who is planning to celebrate, to do so at home or a local establishment.
“We're always mindful that there are permanent residents, there's visiting residents, there's those that come to our region looking for a good time,” he said. “We just encourage them to be responsible, respectful, and most of all, we want to keep people safe.”
In a statement to CityNews 570, the City of Waterloo shared its support for the police's plan.
“There is an operational plan in place for March 17, led by WRPS and supported by the city and other community partners. We encourage anyone who is planning to celebrate that day to do so responsibly at home or one of the many pubs and restaurants in uptown and throughout Waterloo,” the statement said.
Crowell noted the importance of keeping the community safe on the day. Part of the plans for the day includes ensuring road safety with the increased possibility of impaired driving.
“We know that the community is watching attentively for how we respond and how it is managed,” said Crowell. “From a governance standpoint, from a planning standpoint, we are so proud of our police leaders and partners that work to keep everyone safe.”
