Investigation continues after two separate cyber attacks in Woodstock

By Erin Anderson

The City of Woodstock continues to manage what its calling a cyber attack.

A notice on the city's website stated resources have been implemented to address the matter, and appropriate risk management plans are being followed.

The Woodstock Police Service is investigating a similar occurrence.

“Early Monday morning, we detected an attack on our computer services. It's essentially a virus that is impacting our ability to communicate with our internal servers. We took some immediate steps to contain and prevent any potential further impact by shutting down and taking offline some of those systems,” said Chief Daryl Longworth.

Longworth said this is not impacting their ability to provide police services to the community – including day-to-day policing.

“For some people in our community who traditionally communicate with us via email, or with our online reporting feature, they can no longer do that as we've taken our systems offline while we sort through our servers and make sure they're safe before bringing them back up online.”

Woodstock Police have brought in some outside technical advisors – so far, it doesn't seem like any data has been transferred or accessed.

Longworth said there are two separate investigations on the go, and it's too early to say whether the attacks are linked or not.
