City of Kitchener golf courses open for season on Friday (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Mother Nature is certainly putting a damper on the golf season.

The City of Kitchener's three golf courses open Friday, but the Rockwood Golf Course will open with fewer holes because of the soggy ground.

In an email to CityNews 570, Bob Cheyne, Kitchener's manager of sport and golf development said, “Due to the current wet conditions, Rockway Golf Course holes 4, 5 and 6 located across Courtland Avenue will be out of play for the weekend.  Rockway Golf Course will open on Friday, April 22nd, but as a 15-hole course.”

The conditions of these holes will be reassessed before play starts on Monday.

But, eager golfers aren't staying away.

He said, “People are very excited to play. Membership drive is very good and successful. The tee sheet for today (Friday) is filling and filled. There's still spots available, but the weekend looks solid with some sunnier weather.”

Cheyne said the hope is to return to a pre-pandemic feel, though staff will keep masks on and be behind plexiglass.

“You don't have to wear a mask. However, if that's what makes you feel comfortable, please wear a mask.”

He has also noticed a growth in women's golf.

Cheyne said, “Just come out and enjoy the game. Enjoy it. Be respectful of everyone on the course, be mindful of pace of play, engage yourself in the game, and have fun.”

The courses were initially set to open for the season on Wednesday.
