Snow clearing tips from City of Waterloo

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The City of Waterloo has released a statement regarding snow clearing on area sidewalks and trails, following significant snowfall overnight Thursday.

“Staff will start snow clearing operations on our most heavily used primary sidewalks and trails,” the statement confirmed. “When possible, we ask residents to minimize their use of trails and sidewalks to allow staff time to complete their snow clearing operations, and to please use city maintained sidewalks and trails with caution.”

Nicole Papke, director of municipal enforcement for the city said for sidewalks, the responsibility for clearing is a combination between the city and residents.

“Residents are required to have their sidewalks cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall,” said Papke. “We understand that can be challenging for some people, so we urge those that can help their neighbours, to do so.”

Papke said that notices can be issued to residents who don't clear their sidewalks, particularly if there's a complaint.

“We would inspect and issue a notice for them to have it cleared and give a time frame to have it cleared,” added Papke. “Potentially there could be a fine issued. Often times, it involves us [the city] coming, with a contractor, to clear the sidewalk.”

The city also reminded residents to not deposit snow from private properties onto sidewalks, trails, or roadways, as it can be dangerous for pedestrians or drivers.

In its statement, the city said “During the winter months, several city bylaw officers are dedicated full-time to ensuring snow clearing regulations are followed by residents. Staff respond to complaints as well as incorporating a measure of proactive monitoring. To report unshovelled sidewalks, residents in Waterloo can register a complaint online at mypermits.waterloo.ca or call 519-747-6280 to dispatch an officer.”
