Bike thefts increase in the summer, police warn

Despite intense heat and humidity this week, many will still brave the roads on their bikes.
The only thing worse than biking in unrelenting heat, though, is having that bike stolen, especially when it's so hard to find a new one.
Waterloo Regional Police are warning that bike thefts typically increase in the summer.
The police service doesn't have a bike registry, so they're asking you to take a picture with your bike, as well as a picture of its serial number. Having that on hand can help police track it down later on.
To keep that from happening in the first place, you're advised to take a number of steps:
- Always lock your bike to a solid object
- Make sure that your lock cannot be cut
- Lock your bike in a well-lit area with high foot traffic
- Bring your bike in at night. If you are storing it in a garage or shed, ensure that it is closed and secure
