OFSC preparing trails for the upcoming snowmobile season

By Tim Herd

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is currently preparing for the upcoming season, starting with the purchase of ten new groomers, which will be added to their fleet.

“We are also repairing and preparing our other groomers, we have over 300 groomers, and they will be ready to go very soon,” said Landon French, CEO of the OFSC.

There are around 30,000 snowmobile trails across Ontario, and volunteers have been working to ensure there is no excess brush, fallen trees, or wash out on trails as it helps with the grooming.

“You know these groomers aren't light, and once we get the snow the groomers pack it down pretty quickly and form that base that is so important for us, so the flatter the surface, the better it is for them,” mentioned French.

Since the border remains closed, OFSC officials are expecting a busier season, and since the summer they have been working with public health officials across the province to provide a safe riding experience for all.

“When you're riding of course everything is fine, it's when you stop for gas, food, or to load your sled those are the times when we want to make sure people are doing things safely, so we're coming up with protocols shortly for snowmobilers in Ontario so they can still have a great time and ride safe,” added French.

He reminds all riders to purchase a trail permit before they go out on the trails.

Locally, an agreement between GRCA and local snowmobile clubs was not reached for the second year in a row, which means snowmobiling is not permitted in the conservation areas.
